La grande popularité du championnat anglais de voitures de tourisme, le célèbre BTCC (British Touring Car Championship), incite en 1993 Renault Dealer Racing, qui regroupe les concessionnaires britanniques, à y engager deux Renault 19. L'année suivante, elles laissent place à deux Laguna, réalisées en France par Renault Sport Anthony. Le niveau élevé du championnat incite alors Frank Williams et Patrick Head, respectivement directeur général et directeur technique de l'écurie Williams-Renault de Formule 1, à s'impliquer en BTCC. Ils créent Williams Touring Car Engineering et y intègrent les deux Laguna.
La voiture est bien née, puisque dès 1995 elle remporte le titre constructeur devant Vauxhall, Volvo et Ford, grâce notamment aux doublés de fin de saison à Oulton Park et Silverstone d'Alain Menu et Will Hoy. Après une saison 1996 en demi-teinte, ce succès se confirme en 1997 avec les deux titres du championnat, constructeurs et pilotes, pour le Suisse Alain Menu. L'aventure se poursuit en 1998 avec deux Laguna aux couleurs Nescafé Blend 37, confiées à Alain Menu et Jason Plato. La première partie du championnat est prometteuse et Plato s'empare de la tête du championnat au début de la saison. Mais la concurrence s'est affûtée et Renault termine troisième à l'issue de la saison.
L'année suivante, Jean-Christophe Boullion (pilote d'essai Williams F1) remplace Alain Menu, pour une saison globalement décevante. C'est une des deux Laguna de la saison 1999 que nous proposons ici. Elle provient directement du département Renault Classic, qui en a fait l'acquisition à la fin de la saison 1999 auprès de Williams Touring Car. Elle a ensuite été exposée à des fins promotionnelles, au Technocentre Renault en 2003, chez Renault Angleterre (2012-2014 et 2015-2018) Elle n'a jamais couru depuis sa saison en BTCC et se présente donc telle qu'elle était lors de sa dernière course, complète avec ses éléments d'origine, avec sa livrée Nescafé Blend 37.
Elle nécessitera une remise en état mécanique pour pouvoir être à nouveau utilisée sur circuit. C'est une voiture emblématique du célèbre BTCC qu'elle a animé avec brio, contribuant Outre-Manche à la renommée de la marque au losange. The high standard of the championship encouraged Frank Williams and Patrick Head, respectively Team Principal and Technical Director of the Williams-Renault F1 team, to take part in BTCC. They set up Williams Touring Car Engineering and incorporated the two Laguna. The car proved to be well set up and won the constructor's title in 1995, ahead of Vauxhall, Volvo and Ford, thanks in particular to Alain Menu and Will Hoy's end of season wins at both Oulton Park and Silverstone. After a lacklustre season in 1996, the winning ways returned in 1997 with two championship titles, drivers' and constructors', for the Swiss Alain Menu.
The adventure continued in 1998 with two Laguna in Nescafé Blend 37 livery, driven by Alain Menu and Jason Plato. The early part of the championship went well, with Plato taking the lead at the start of the season. Competition stiffened however, and Renault finished third that year. The following year, Jean-Christophe Boullion (Williams F1 test driver) replaced Alain Menu, and the season overall was disappointing. It is one of the two Laguna from the 1999 season that we are presenting for sale. It comes directly from the Renault Classic department, who acquired the car at the end of the 1999 season from Williams Touring Car.
It has not been raced since then, but used for promotional purposes, exhibited at Technocentre Renault in 2003 and Renault England (2012-2014 and 2015-2018). The car is presented just as it was after its last race, complete with all original parts, in its Nescafé Blend 37 livery. It will require a mechanical overhaul before being taken out on a circuit again.
