The story of this Renault 5 Turbo 2 is quite unusual, especially as it has had only three owners from new. To begin, it is worth recalling that in 1985, to meet the competition homologation requirements for the R5 Maxi Turbo, Renault produced a series of 200 “customer” examples (Type 8221). Compared with the production version, these featured several improvements: displacement was increased to 1,432 cc (from 1,397 cc) by lengthening the stroke, and some body panels—particularly the roof—were replaced with aluminium parts.
Sold new in Carcassonne by the Renault dealer at the time, this Turbo 2 “8221” belonged to a member of the military for three months, then to its second owner from 1985 to 2013, and finally to its current seller. A former Renault engineer who worked in the design department, specifically on the development of new models and prototypes, he later became a Renault dealer from 1995 to 2018. He bought this car with the intention of taking part in historic events in Group 4 configuration. He knew the Turbo 2, as it had been serviced at his dealership, and it had just over 35,000 km on the clock when he acquired it.
To ensure the car was in perfect condition, he put it on a frame bench to inspect the structure and reinforce it to Cévennes specification, around the shock absorber towers and the front and rear longitudinal rail gussets. At the same time, the wheel arches were enlarged to accommodate 15-inch wheels. These modifications, carried out by the engineer, adhered as closely as possible to Renault’s period specifications. The car was also fitted with a bolt-in Renault Sport Group 4 roll cage and Turbo 1 bucket seats. Les Selliers du Domaine refurbished the seats, door panels, carpets and headlining.
The restoration work took more than five years, but by then our engineer had changed priorities and wanted to devote himself to his other passion, boating. He did not want to homologate the car in Group B, which explains why this superb Turbo 2 is now for sale. Today, with just under 38,000 km on the clock, it retains its original mechanical components, which have been inspected and are in good condition. The clutch is new, and the gear linkage has been improved with R5 competition-type rods. The manifold, intercooler and turbo are Cévennes-type parts, purchased from 3S Développement, as was the large aluminium radiator.
The original intercooler, radiator and manifold are supplied with the car, as are the seats, door panels and TRX wheels. This is therefore a superb car, benefiting from a careful and understated preparation, which can be further developed to suit its future owner’s wishes. It is ideal for entering the finest historic regularity rallies, such as the Tour de Corse. A promise of unforgettable thrills. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ADDITIONAL PARTS INCLUDED WITH THE CAR MUST BE COLLECTED AFTER THE SALE, AT THE BUYER’S EXPENSE, FROM SOUTH-WEST FRANCE NEAR TOULOUSE.
