Originally the product of a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen, the Porsche 914 was conceived as a dual-purpose model that would serve as both a replacement for the entry-level version of the 911, the 4-cylinder powered 912, and as a Volkswagen “halo car.” The midengine, targa top design looked to be the perfect solution for both marques, but when VW Chairman Heinrich Nordhoff suddenly passed away in 1968, his successor, Kurt Lotz, stipulated changes to the arrangement that would see the 914 marketed as a Porsche in the lucrative North American market and as a VW-Porsche in Europe.

Introduced at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show, the production 914 in both 4- and 6-cylinder specification incorporated 911 front suspension and steering, a roomy interior featuring a mix of Porsche and VW components, a lift-off Targa top and surprisingly ample storage capacity. Both the 1.7L flat-4 914 and its 2.0L 914-6 counterpart were relatively underpowered at 80 and 110 HP, respectively, but in 1970, Motor Trend Magazine named the 914 its first Import Car of the Year.

Porsche ceased production of the 914-6 in 1972 when the market rejected its relatively high price tag, but increased displacement in the 914’s flat-4 to 2.0L and replaced its dual carburetors with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, breathing extra performance into the mix. The result was a car that American race driver Richie Ginther described as “the closest thing to a Formula One car for the road.” This 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 5-speed Targa is a splendid example finished in Ravenna Green Metallic paint with a black Targa roof, chrome bumpers and Continental tires on alloy wheels with colored Porsche center crests—desirable features in this classic Porsche.

The black, leather-and-fabric interior presents in outstanding condition, offering bucket seats, a console-mounted shifter, tachometer and clock, a heater/defroster and an AM/FM radio. With the rising popularity of classic Porsches of all types, quality examples such as this 914 2.0 Targa are once again demonstrating why the model was Porsche’s runaway best seller during its relatively brief production run.
