With a mere 356 units produced for worldwide consumption—100 of which were imported to the United States—the 2011 Porsche Speedster is the rare creation of Porsche’s Exclusive Department, a car that was intended from the start to pay homage to the bathtub 356 of the same name produced in the 1950s. There’s no question that the 356 unit total was not by mistake. Available in only two colors—Pure Blue and Carrara White—this Speedster is one of just 40 finished in white.
The 2011 Speedster is immediately recognized by its unique shape, starting with its steeply raked windshield that has been chopped by almost 2.5 inches, the twin-hump tonneau covering the rear section of the cabin, a low-slung cloth/canvas convertible top, wider rear fenders that accommodate a 44mm wider rear track, black-spoked Fuchs style wheels with a polished lip mounted on wide low-profile tires and GT3-inspired front and rear body/bumper sections. The net result of these visual changes makes for an inspiring silhouette reminiscent of its 356 progenitor.
In sharp contrast to the original 356 Speedster, which was a bare-bones minimalist sports car, the 2011 Speedster is a modern and heavily optioned car that comes with a litany of standard of features, including the PDK 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, carbon-ceramic disc brakes, Porsche Active Suspension Management, Sport Chrono Package, Bose CD/DVD entertainment center, Bluetooth and Navigation connectivity, power windows, seats and locks, climate control, cruise control, Park Assist and rain-sensing wipers. Powered by a 3.8L flat-6 engine sourced from the 911 GTS that produces 408 HP, the Speedster is a strong-accelerating sports car with a factory-rated 0-60 MPH time of just 4.6 seconds.
