The distinctive “ducktail” rear spoiler of Porsche’s Carrera RS has defined one of the most sought-after sports cars to emerge from the fabled Stuttgart marque. The model was born out of Porsche’s burning desire to enter the FIA’s newly launched racing series for production cars, filling the void left after the retirement of the Le Mans-winning Type 917 prototype racer of late-1960s and early-1970s fame. Not only would another successful racing programme continue Porsche’s presence in competition, company bosses hoped it would also boost sales of its road-going stock, too.
Using the 911 S Coupé as a starting point, Porsche’s competition department developed two homologated versions of the Carrera RS. The Sport model, also known as the “Lightweight” (option M471), was intended for competition use and would be largely stripped of its interior. The Touring version (M472) offered some of the Lightweight’s features but was more civilised for spirited yet comfortable road use.
Of the 1,580 Carrera RSs to leave Zuffenhausen, 1,308—including chassis “1446”, the car offered here— were built to the popular “M472” Touring specification. The Porsche is documented to have been delivered new to Germany in June 1973. It left the factory in Grand Prix White (with Red Lettering) over a Black Leatherette interior, the same colour configuration it wears today.
Thought to have been raced by its first owner in both Germany and the United Kingdom, it is believed that the Porsche was subject to restoration work in the UK in the mid-1990s. By the end of the decade, the Carrera RS was sold to Japan, and then the United States in 2003. During its time in the US, the car came into the ownership of the noted car collector, Ted Gildred, prior to being sold alongside other cars from his collection after he passed away in 2019.
Accompanied by workshop invoices from 2005 to 2015, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity issued by Porsche Cars North America, and a period Porsche Driver’s Manual—further to the inclusion of selected spares and a toolkit—this seminal Porsche is a ticket into an exclusive club of Carrera RS ownership that only so many can enjoy at once.
Le spoiler arrière en "queue de canard" très particulier de la Porsche Carrera RS a donné son identité à l'un des modèles les plus convoités produits par la légendaire marque de Stuttgart. Cette voiture est née du souhait de Porsche de participer à la nouvelle catégorie lancée par la FIA pour les voitures de série, comblant ainsi le vide laissé après le retrait de la Porsche 917, célèbre à la fin des années 60 et au début des années 70 notamment pour ses succès aux 24 Heures du Mans. Un autre programme de course permettait à Porsche de maintenir sa présence en compétition, tout en stimulant aussi les ventes des modèles de tourisme comme l'espéraient les dirigeants de la marque.
En utilisant comme base le coupé Porsche 911 S, le département Porsche compétition a mis au point deux versions homologuées de la Carrera RS. Le modèle Sport, également connu sous l'appellation "Lightweight" (option M471), était destiné à un usage compétition et son habitacle était très dépouillé. La version Touring (M472) offrait une partie des caractéristiques de la Lightweight, mais elle était plus civilisée pour permettre une utilisation sportive mais confortable.
Des 1 580 Carrera RS ayant quitté l'usine de Zuffenhausen, 1 308 exemplaires — dont le châssis 1446 proposé ici — ont été produits selon les spécifications Touring "M472". Les documents indiquent que cette Porsche a été livrée neuve en juin 1973 en Allemagne. Quand elle a quitté l'usine elle était blanc Grand Prix (avec lettrage rouge) et présentait un intérieur en simili noir, la même configuration que celle qui est la sienne aujourd'hui.
Après avoir sans doute couru en Allemagne et en Angleterre entre les mains de son premier propriétaire, cette Porsche aurait fait l'objet de travaux de restauration au Royaume-Uni au milieu des années 90. A la fin de la décennie, cette Carrera RS a été vendue au Japon, puis en 2003 aux États-Unis. Pendant son séjour dans ce pays, elle a appartenu au collectionneur réputé Ted Gildred avant d'être vendue avec d'autres voitures de sa collection après son décès en 2019.
Accompagnée de factures de travaux de 2005 à 2015, d'un "Certificate of Authenticity" délivré par Porsche Cars North America, et d'un manuel d'utilisation Porsche d'époque — en plus d'un jeu de pièces de rechange et d'une trousse à outils — cette Porsche importante constitue un ticket d'entrée dans le club exclusif des propriétaires de Carrera RS dont rares sont les heureux élus.
