The GT3 moniker was initially applied to the 911 with the first-generation water-cooled 996 back in 1999. The GT3 was specifically developed as a homologation special to qualify it for participation in the FIA-sanctioned Group 3 production racing class as well as the Carrera Cup series, Porsche’s own single-marque series consisting of equally prepared 911 race cars piloted by world-renown drivers. The Carrera Cup series was held in conjunction with the Formula 1 race series and was the Saturday show that preceded the Sunday F1 main event. The 2019 GT3 RS is a lethal weapon.
To put things into perspective, this generation of the GT3 RS lapped Nürburgring in 7 minutes, 20 seconds—a lap speed nearly 8 seconds faster than the Carrera GT, Porsche’s flagship supercar of a previous era. With a 4.0L horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine producing 500 HP and a PDK 7-speed automatic transmission, the 2019 Porsche GT3 RS can reach a terminal velocity of 193 MPH and accelerate from 0-60 MPH in just 3.1 seconds. The engine is a masterpiece of engineering with a billet steel crankshaft—constructed of the same V361 steel used on the 919 Hybrid Endurance Race Car—with titanium connecting rods.
