The slogan used in 1939 was, “You’ll be Proud to own a Pontiac,” and this fantastic coupe-based Street Rod, once part of that year’s expanded De Luxe line, will let you live up to it. American cars had been rapidly changing in the latter half of the 1930s, now featuring smoother, blended lines and Art Deco trim levels. Though modified with modern changes, this Fisher-bodied coupe still showcases those ideals with paired chrome grilles separated by the leading-edge trim, an indian-head-in-profile hood mascot, and bulging, rear-swept fenders. Of course, with horsepower a part of Hot Rodding, a 350 CI engine now resides between the frame rails.
This features a chrome air cleaner, aluminum intake, tubular headers and cast valve covers. Behind it is a Turbo 350 transmission and a 10-bolt rear end, making for a reliably built, updated driveline. Handling is also vastly improved, thanks to power rack-and-pinion steering and a Mustang II-design front end, and this car has also been upgraded with power 4-wheel disc brakes, air shocks and a sway bar. Once you open the doors up, the red interior is invitingly clean. The steering wheel and column are upgraded, a chromed-fascia dash panel hosts dial-face gauges, and air-conditioning is on tap. There is also a Sony stereo, navigation capability and a back-up camera.
The body is covered in rich black paint with a single body-length red side stripe, horizontal side grilles with chrome ribbing, dual outside mirrors, bumper-mounted auxiliary lights and bulls-eye tail lamps. The car now rides on 5-spoke polished aftermarket wheels featuring tri-point center caps and wearing modern blackwall rubber for excellent road feel. Today, Pontiac as a brand has followed many other marques into the sands of history.
