Jim Wangers’ name is synonymous with Pontiac performance machinery—especially the original GTO that fired the first shot in the muscle-car wars of the 1960s—so it was natural that the talents at Big 3 Performance in Green Bay, Wisconsin, would turn to him for guidance in shaping this 1969 LeMans into a modern interpretation of the legendary GTO Judge. Dubbed the Jim Wangers Signature Edition GTO, this fabulous Resto Modded Pontiac, No. 1 in the series, is built on a custom chassis by The Roadster Shop/RS Performance Concepts of Mundelein, Illinois, who also contributed prototype work.
Genuine Pontiac power drives this retro road-carver in the form of a 505 CI block stuffed with Eagle H-beam rods and Ross aluminum pistons on a forged-steel crank and topped with an Aeromotive fuel system feeding a FAST fuel-injection setup and fired by MSD ignition. Ferrea exhaust valves release the spent gasses through Doug’s headers into a 3-inch X-pipe stainless-steel exhaust system with Pypes mufflers. The resulting peak output of 680 HP and 664 lb-ft of torque travels through a Tremec TR6060 6-speed transmission to a Roadster Shop 4-link-mounted Ford 9-inch rear with 3.73:1 Detroit Truetrac differential and 31-spline Moser axles.
The Jim Wangers Signature Edition GTO improves on the original Judge’s exceptional road hugging through the use of Corvette rack-and-pinion steering, C6 Corvette front spindles, Eibach springs with AFCO double adjustable coilovers and Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes. The custom black leather interior fits like a fine driving glove, and the exterior finish is archetypal Judge, but with a 21st-century punch: pearl-saturated Carousel Red paint, classic multi-color graphics and HRE/Jim Wangers Signature Edition 20-inch wheels shod with low-profile Michelin rubber. The Pontiac name may have disappeared from GM’s roster, but the GTO and its stalwart Godfather continue to thrill the faithful.
