Just in case the owners of competing performance cars began thinking Pontiac’s GTO was getting soft in the middle by 1968, the folks at Pontiac reminded them on December 18 of that year that both the GTO’s performance and image were alive and well. The point was driven home with the release of The Judge, a new GTO launched for 1969 with an irreverent attitude poking fun at the muscle car establishment. Selecting the Code WT1 Judge package added $337 to the GTO sticker price and started with a standard 400/366 HP V-8 Ram Air III engine.
Dual functional hood scoops rammed fresh, cool air to the engine, a 60-inch wide wing graced the rear deck, and a body-color, flexible Endura front bumper surrounded a blacked-out, twin-element grille with optional retractable headlight covers. The outrageous Carousel Red paint finish, more orange than red in hue, was topped by flashy body-side stripes and accented by silver-painted Rally II wheels devoid of bright trim rings. Higher-rate springs and recalibrated shocks enhanced the handling characteristics of this consistent 14-second dragstrip performer. Only 6,725 Judge-optioned hardtops and 108 convertibles were built for 1969.
This factory 4-speed, Ram Air III-powered Judge is one of 4,894 so equipped for 1969. Benefiting from a meticulous restoration, it is finished in its original shade of Carousel Red with correct badging and decals in place. Power is delivered by a 400/366 HP V-8 engine to the pavement via a 4-speed manual transmission and Safe-T-Track differential. Power steering and front disc brakes handle directional control and stopping. Other highlights include the original Parchment interior, a pushbutton radio, remote mirrors, Deluxe seat belts and shoulder straps, a hood tachometer, center console, a Rally gauge cluster with clock, and Soft Ray glass.
Accompanied by PHS documents, this iconic first-year GTO Judge rides on a set of period-correct tires mounting original PMD Rally II wheels.
