Undeterred by GM’s infamous 1963 racing ban, the giant corporation’s Pontiac Motor Division continued its winning ways producing and selling street performance cars that could also translate to competition. Taking stock of Pontiac’s model lineup, parts bin and GM corporate restrictions limiting engine size in its intermediate models, Pontiac’s top engineers selected the 389 CI V-8 engine and combined it with many other performance and image features to create arguably the first true muscle car. Cunningly slipped past the GM bureaucrats as an option package, thereby not requiring corporate approval, it was named GTO, a bold swipe at Ferrari’s megabuck GT racer.
A startling value, the GTO option endowed the Pontiac 389/325 HP V-8 with 421 HO heads, a high-lift cam, a Carter AFB 4-barrel carburetor, 10.75:1 compression, chrome accents and the optional Tri-Power induction. The GTO option was a highly integrated package of engine, braking, drivetrain, suspension and appearance features aimed straight at the hearts and minds of the exploding youth market. Sales of the GTO were overwhelming for 1964, spurred by the marketing wizardry of Jim Wangers and the performance gurus at Detroit’s Royal Pontiac. Refinements for 1965 created what many enthusiasts consider the definitive first-generation GTO.
Crisply restyled body lines with stacked twin headlights on each side, revised tail lamps, a muscular hood bulge and a power boost courtesy of a revised camshaft combined to make the 1965 GTO an undisputed favorite. This exceptional GTO Hardtop is finished in special Paint Code 2-2 Tiger Gold with a black vinyl top and interior, which characterized this package that was featured in an unforgettable Pontiac ad campaign. Previously owned by MLB Hall of Fame legend Reggie Jackson, this GTO benefits from a comprehensive body-off restoration and is accompanied by PHS documents.
Powered by the legendary 389/360 HP Tri-Power V-8 engine driving a 4-speed manual transmission and Saf-T-Track rear axle, the GTO includes rare Hurst wheels and badging.
