By 1967, the Pontiac GTO had established itself very well as a performance car that commanded respect. It spoke in volumes to the exploding youth market, which sought vehicles that were fresh and far and away from the rides their mom and pops kept in the garage. When the GTO concept was hatched by John DeLorean, Pontiac bosses were lukewarm to the idea and, in fact, declined producing it. They thought they would be lucky to see 10,000 sales, while DeLorean was insisting it would be easy to sell closer to 20,000. Instead, Pontiac General Manager Pete Estes approved the GTO as an option package for the newly engineered and newly styled 1964 Tempest rather than a standalone model.
Ultimately, everyone was wrong about the sales numbers, and the GTO package stunned with more than 30,000 sold that year. These sales immediately garnered the GTO the respect it needed from the decision makers to become a standalone model for 1966, meanwhile gaining additional performance, style and luxury options along the way, all allowing buyers to truly custom tailor their GTOs exactly how they wanted. For 1967, the 389 CI V-8 engine was bored and stroked to 400 CI and available in three variants with 265 HP, 335 HP or 360 HP; this 1967 Pontiac GTO is of the 360 HP variety.
The subject of a frame-off restoration, this example features PHS documentation and an array of interesting options including its rare, factory, two-tone exterior paint. It’s finished in Starlight Black over Silverglaze, and details are subtle but abounding, such as the black pinstripe defining the beltline and the redline BF Goodrich Silvertown tires by Coker on Rally I wheels. The 400 CI HO V-8 is paired with a factory 4-speed manual transmission, which is controlled by a correct, black-knob, round Hurst shifter and a Saf-T-Trac rear end.
Front disc brakes more efficiently scrub down speed, and the new black interior is fitted with bucket seats, a center console and the Rally gauge package, which includes a tachometer and is set within a wood-grained bezel with bright surrounds and detailing.
