Back in 1964, Pontiac led a revolution in the auto industry by introducing a factory-built Hot Rod that many consider to be the first American muscle car: the GTO. Thanks to a bunch of renegade car guys—the likes of DeLorean, Gee, Collins, Estes and Wangers—who ignored GM corporate policy and brought forth a car they knew nearly every red-blooded American under the age of 40 years of age would pine for. Straight out of the gate, the GTO was a success, which sent Ford and Chrysler scrambling back to the drawing boards.
By 1967, the last year for the first generation, the GTO now faced competition from Ford’s 428 FE-powered XL, Plymouth’s 440 GTX and even its brother, Chevrolet’s SS396 Chevelle. The race for sales was on. This unrestored, highly original 1967 Pontiac GTO is presented in the desirable special-order Tiger Gold paint scheme, which was sprayed on at least 200 cars that year, with just 50 of those assigned to promote the Thom McAnn shoe GTO giveaway (the McAnn GTO shoes were considered America’s first driving shoe). After the promotion, all except the actual prize cars were reassigned to car dealers for sale.
Still wearing its original body panels and a black vinyl top, the GTO also holds its matching-numbers 400 CI V-8 mill between the frame rails, backed by a 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission. Fitted with power steering and power-assisted brakes, the car rides on PMD wheels wearing BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. The GTO’s cabin is still shod in its original gold interior, with vinyl-covered front buckets and rear bench seats. The driver’s gauge panel features four round gauge binnacles, heating and air conditioning controls, and a radio, all of which is surrounded in faux wood.
A Mallory tachometer sits above the full-length center console, which includes a Hurst Dual Gate shifter and covered storage and also features walnut applique. As the saying goes, “it’s only original once,” and this is one Goat that typifies that expression.
