While most people know that the GTO helped Pontiac get a lot of attention, the roots of “The Great One” were based on cars like this stylish “Wide Track” Catalina. This 1962 Pontiac Catalina showcases an extensive rotisserie-based restoration that was completed in 2024, and it is documented by its Protect-O-Plate and PHS documents. The Catalina was offered by Pontiac as a sport model without the expense of the premium Gran Prix, and this car has its original red standard interior.
The Wide Tracks had been restyled for 1962 with a new split grille, a reworked rear design featuring curved tail lamps that were reworked into the outer body, and a cab design that was created to increase the impression of width. Here, power under the hood comes from a Code 10B 389 CI Tri-Power V-8 engine. That engine’s tucked in a detailed engine bay featuring a dual-snorkel air cleaner atop the trio of 2-barrel carburetors. There is correct engine paint and the yellow caution warning on the fan shroud, with a yellow cap battery finishing it up. The details under the hood show off painted and bare-metal presentations, and the car is equipped with dual exhaust.
This is backed up with the 4-speed manual transmission and a 3.90-gear Positraction differential. The exterior features Belmar Red poly paint, accented by the chrome side spear running from the doors to the back bumper. The curved A-pillars are a signature of this model design, and inside one finds comfortable seats covered in red upholstery, the Deluxe AM Radio, Soft-Ray tinted glass and the special two-spoke steering wheel with a red-and-clear rim and deep-centered center cap. There is a Pontiac bezel used on the radio and a white ball knob atop the curvaceous shifter handle.
Outside, the car features dual-speed wipers, Catalina model identification and steel wheels in black with small-diameter hubcaps and blackwall tires, completing its no-nonsense appearance. The Catalina was indeed a forerunner of the future GTO, and this example should be considered a “Great One” as well.
