Royal Pontiac, a medium-sized car dealer in Royal Oak, Michigan, was the official, yet “unofficial,” back door to the Pontiac factory with access to all the parts and resources of Pontiac Engineering. This 1960 Pontiac Super Duty Catalina, known as “Hot Chief No. 2,” was one of just two 1960 Catalinas built to compete in NHRA drag racing under the Royal Pontiac banner. This Shelltone Ivory car came equipped with the 389/368 HP Tri-Power engine and Hydramatic transmission.
Additionally, it was specially outfitted with all available Super Duty components including the aluminum front bumper, Super Duty heads and intake manifold, and the removal of all sound deadening and body sealer to further reduce weight. This car and its companion 1960 Royal Pontiac Catalina, “Hot Chief No. 1,” competed very successfully around the country that year. Among other accomplishments, Hot Chief No. 2 made it all the way to the final run at the U.S. Nationals in 1960, driven by Dick Jesse and tuned by Frank Rediker and Win Brown. Hot Chief No. 2 was restored by Chuck Simpson in South Carolina and received Outstanding in Class at the 2014 POCI Pontiac Convention.
It is believed to be the only surviving 1960 Super Duty Catalina in the country as the whereabouts of Hot Chief No. 1 are unknown and it’s believed to have been destroyed.
