The car offered here is one step beyond. Formerly known as the Holley Road Runner, the original construction of this 1969 Plymouth was covered in a 12-part series in Mopar Muscle magazine. This was a custom, nut-and-bolt Pro Touring project by Muscle Car Restorations in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and done in conjunction with a number of major sponsors. Today, over a decade later, this Road Runner has been even further fortified. Under the hood is a 440-based 542 CI engine pro built by Indy Cylinder Head Inc. and originally dyno tested at 711 HP with 740 lb-ft of torque in the magazine feature.
Topped with Indy’s 440SR-906 iron heads and Lunati forged internals, the package now hosts an 8-71-style polished billet supercharger by The Blower Shop with dual 4-barrel Holley 750 CFM carburetors as well as a scoop pushing skyward from the engine bay. Engine detailing is stylish, with updated cooling and ignition components, but the OEM-type “Voice of Road Runner” horn is still there. To get power to the tires, a Keisler-built 5-speed Tremec transmission and a custom-built Dana 60 rear end with ARB locker were also added. The car received a coilover front suspension conversion, and it now has 4-wheel Baer disc brakes as well.
Inside, this Plymouth features a black bench seat, Pistol Grip 5-speed floor shifter, Vintage Air, auxiliary gauges, Grant GT wood-rimmed steering wheel, period-appearing column-mounted tachometer, and a complete Kenwood stereo system with trunk-mounted disc changer. The exterior is in bright orange, and the fiberglass hood features blackout treatment and hood pins in all four corners. The remainder of the car showcases OEM cues, including Road Runner identification, dual chrome tips and chromed 5-spoke wheels with BF Goodrich radial tires.
A participant on the 2003 Hot Rod Power Tour and then Year One's official sponsor display vehicle on the 2004 Power Tour, this is a classic street machine that has evolved into a beast. With the supercharged Road Runner, raw power has a name—just say “beep-beep!”
