This beautifully finished 1941 Plymouth woody wagon is the product of a painstaking three-year, 4,000-hour restoration by noted restorer and then-owner Lon Kruger of Sun Valley Classics in Scottsdale, Arizona. Just six years after Walter P. Chrysler created the brand in 1928, Plymouth began offering its first woody wagon, which was built by the U.S. Body and Forging Company in Tell City, Indiana. Those first, quite rudimentary wagons featured drafty side curtains and were finished only in black, but it was not long before side glass windows were made available along with a choice of three tailgate designs and more paint colors.
In three short years prior to World War II, woody production leapt from 555 units in 1938 to 5,811 in 1941 when Plymouth made significant changes to the model. Now built mostly on the new P12 Deluxe chassis, the 1941 Plymouth woody wagon was available for the first time with a choice of finishes for the external woodwork. All frames were constructed of rugged but attractive White Ash, but buyers could choose between White Maple and Honduras Mahogany for the panels. This Kruger-restored 1941 Plymouth woody once served duty in Canada’s Great White North, ferrying passengers between Alberta’s Jasper National Park Lodge and the town’s Canadian Pacific Railway station.
Painted in lustrous Cabino Beige with a matching Beige roof and Brown interior, the car is meticulously finished and detailed throughout and features most of the original wood with the exception of Mahogany inserts. The interior presents exceptionally well with very fresh-looking upholstery, controls and trim and finely detailed woodwork. Powered by Plymouth’s rugged 201 inline-6 engine with 3-speed manual and a 6-volt electrical system, this exactingly restored prewar Plymouth woody is offered with the original Plymouth brochures and National Parks of Canada yearly passes from 1962 to 1966, still affixed to the original glass replaced during the restoration.
