Keeping it pure is not always simple in today’s Rodding world, as there are a number of “easier” ways to install certain popular engines into virtually any car. However, for those who are a “Mopar or no car” type of owner, having Brand X under the bonnet “just ain’t gonna cut it.” Rest easy, friend, because here is a 1933 Plymouth 5-window coupe, something of a rarity itself, that has had a purist Pentastar powerplant installed and ready for action. The builder obviously took a great deal of care when executing the overall package, and behind its center-hinged engine covers is a 360 CI LA-series Chrysler V-8 engine.
This uses a Carter-type 4-barrel carburetor under a chrome air cleaner, an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold, detailed exhaust manifolds, iron heads topped with Moroso valve covers and an aluminum radiator with electric fan. This is backed by a Chrysler A904 transmission, and to fit everything into the body, a Jaguar front and rear suspension was tucked underneath, complete with power steering and power brakes. Covered in bright red paint, the car has been massaged to blend the fenders and running boards together and is now sans bumpers and much of the other period chrome. The roof has been chopped and care taken to create an aggressive first impression.
Behind the “suicide” front-opening doors, you find the interior is beautifully appointed in cream-color cloth materials with posh bucket seats, a floor shifter, power windows, billet handles, air conditioning, a custom wheel mounted on a tilt steering column and VDO gauges installed in a billet instrument panel. Outside, this one has rubber-covered running boards, custom body-color outside mirrors that are door mounted, a black top, the “6” emblem centered in the body-matched grille and frame, and dual chrome exhaust exits. A final touch here is the selection of slotted wheels equipped with knock-offs and hosting a set of BF Goodrich radial tires.
Plymouth was still in its first decade when this body was built, and the brand is now history. This gorgeous reconstruction continues that Mopar heritage—driveline and all.
