It’s not often you see a 1951 Plymouth Cambridge Club Coupe, let alone one in this outstanding condition. Introduced as a midrange model in 1951, the Cambridge Club Coupe featured electric windshield wipers and downdraft carburetors. Undoubtedly, this one has been lovingly maintained throughout its ownership. Restored on an as-needed basis, this Plymouth appears solid as a rock, with no evidence of rust noted. This Club Coupe looks like it just rolled off the assembly line in 1951. Featuring a repaint in the original Luna Gray, the stainless is polished and chrome is new—even the plastic Plymouth emblems are NOS.
The period-style visor looks right at home, shading the occupants, while the original sealed-beam headlights light the way out front. Chrysler wire wheels and whitewall tires were added at some point but fit the car's look perfectly. In the highly detailed engine compartment sits a 217 CI flathead straight-6 engine. Rated at 97 HP, it isn't going to win many races these days, but it was known for its durability and reliability in its time. A manual 3-speed Synchro-Silent gear transmission running through a single-plate clutch moves the driveshaft to a Hotchkiss rear end. With the "Safety-Flow Ride" Oriflow shock absorbers, this beauty should ride like it’s on pillows.
Entering the passenger compartment is like stepping back in time with seat and door coverings mimicking the original broadcloth upholstery of the chair-high bench seat. The most dramatic change from the previous year was the dash, which featured a vertical wood-grain finish. The instrument panel was now in front of the driver with the radio, speaker grille and heater control lined up down the center. This one sports the factory gauges, radio and optional clock above the ashtray. A new original-style wiring harness replaces the original. The trunk even has the original floor mat and spare tire.
This 1951 Plymouth Club Coupe is a cream puff that harkens back to a simpler time but is ready to be enjoyed for many years to come.
