There are well-publicized automobiles that stand out in the memory of car enthusiasts, and this particular 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda remains one of them. Of course, the legend of this unique two-year-only model release stands on its own merits in today’s collector market, but this example takes it one step further. Documented with its original broadcast sheet and fender tag, this first-year E-body is purportedly the former “Pink Panther Car” used by BF Goodrich for advertising and promotional work.
Factory finished and delivered in W1 Alpine White before being repainted in Moulin Rouge for its BF Goodrich promotion work, this car was restored back to its original color in 2018 with Moulin Rouge paint still extant within the trunk. This Cuda is one of only 652 Hemi Cuda hardtops produced during the 1970 model year, and it is also one of the only 368 examples produced with an automatic transmission. This hot Plymouth is powered by a matching-numbers 426 Hemi V-8 engine, itself a huge part of this model’s storied reputation. The 7.0L big-block has dual 4-barrel carburetors on the aluminum intake, iron hemispherical cylinder heads, dual exhaust and extreme-duty cooling components.
A Torqueflite automatic transmission is behind this. The Alpine White appearance outside is pure Mopar, with the body lines accented with an argent-tone Shaker hood scoop, Cuda rocker trim and road lamps. The interior is done in contrasting black and features front bucket seats, a center console with ball-knob Slap-Stik, Rallye instrument cluster featuring clock and tach, tinted glass and upgraded audio equipment by Alpine. In addition to hood pins, the car features a set of color-matched steel wheels with bright, small-diameter hubcaps, wearing a set of road-friendly BF Goodrich radial tires. Finally, provenance for this car is augmented by a Chrysler Registry report.
A classic in every way, this well-remembered Hemi Mopar will continue to garner attention.
