They called the engine various things: the Orange Monster, King Kong and a simple four-letter word, Hemi. In 1970, somebody ordered a very special example of it using Plymouth’s just-released E-body Cuda. In fact, adding the 426/425 HP Hemi engine created a specific vehicle package called Hemi Cuda, and the car here is believed to be one-of-one produced as-equipped. It is listed in the Chrysler Registry, and its condition is the result of a concours rotisserie restoration, documented with receipts and a CD of photos.
The Cuda is documented with its original fender tag and professional decoding, while the new-for-1970 factory Shaker hood features dual 4-barrel carburetors underneath, plus the race-bred reciprocating assembly and a high-flow factory exhaust system. It was ordered with the Super Performance Axle, the engine is backed by the A727 automatic transmission and a Dana 60 Sure Grip 4.10 final gear ratio, and power disc brakes, extreme-duty suspension and the 26-inch heavy-duty radiator and seven-blade fan make it even sweeter. The restoration effort also resulted in a highly detailed engine bay and undercarriage.
This car was originally ordered and delivered in Rallye Red, the same color in which it was refinished. There are rare A22 elastomeric front and rear bumpers, a matched red Shaker bubble, black “HEMI” hockey stripes and a black vinyl top. The matched black interior is wonderfully appointed with bucket seats, a center console with Slap Stik shifter, Rallye gauges with both a clock and N85 tachometer, a rim-blow steering wheel, a Music Master AM radio and a left-hand remote mirror, with both sport mirrors also painted body color. The car has the ribbed lower rocker moldings, “Hemi’Cuda” scoop callouts, hood pins, road lamps and the red-striped grille.
There are usually several Hemi Cudas for sale at any given time, but there aren’t many like this one. The factory color combination and optioning are stellar, and its provenance is included. For those considering joining the Rapid Transit System, this very special first-year Hemi Cuda is a good way to get there fast.
