It’s the entire package that makes a car attractive, and from the very beginning, Plymouth seemed to have struck the mark with the 1970 Cuda. A complete redesign from the earlier A-body versions, these new E-body platform models were created in part to make the E74 Street Hemi a production option. This attractive example is one of 284 factory-built 4-speed R-code Hemi Cuda hardtops produced for 1970. The car’s wide stance, crisp exterior and driveline options received a good deal of attention in the media back then, and this vehicle’s refreshing has likewise been focused.
For instance, the engine was rebuilt by Black Horse Motorwerks in Bucyrus, Kansas, at a cost of $28,672.53, a rebuild that included replacing the fuel pump, starter and voltage regulator. The noted dual-inline Carter AFB 4-barrel carburetors, the final Detroit engine still offered from the factory in 8-barrel trim, are under the argent Shaker hood scoop, and dual exhaust exits through the rear valance panel. Also equipped with the Hemi A833 transmission, this Hemi Cuda features the A33 Track Pak, meaning a 3.54 gear in the 9.75-inch Dana 60 Sure Grip differential, heavy-duty suspension and a 26-inch radiator with a seven-blade fan.
As easily seen, the N96 Shaker fresh-air hood tops the engine. The body is finished in brilliant EV2 TorRed with black “HEMI” hockey-stick striping. Once inside, there are high-back front bucket seats, wood-grain interior trim accents, the short-throw Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, a Chrysler Solid State AM radio and the Rallye dash that includes the 8,000 RPM tachometer. This car has lower rocker moldings, hood pins, wheel-well brightwork, premium dual body-color exterior mirrors with driver’s side remote, and road lamps. The final touches are top-line 15-inch Rallye wheels with argent centers and trim rings, all wrapped in Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15 tires.
The model’s legacy has lasted far longer than the brief two-year production window, and this Hemi Cuda marks a unique opportunity to join that legacy.
