James Ward Packard founded his namesake Packard Motor Car Company on the premise that he could build a superior automobile. Early single-cylinder conveyances with 7 horsepower evolved into sleek 12-cylinder luxury automobiles, before fading from the scene in the 1950s. Enter Bud Bayliff, who purchased the rights to the Packard name during the late '70s and carried on the coach-built Packard tradition. This hand-built continuation roadster was completed in 2003 and titled as a 1949 with classic style meeting modern engineering and convenience.
The Packard Bayliff Roadster is the only one of its kind to exist, constructed at great expense as a prototype for a limited-production run that never began. Under the sleek neo-classic handcrafted body of the revival Bayliff Roadster is a modern powertrain and suspension sourced from the Lincoln division. The Lincoln V-8 is dressed as a visual tribute to the legendary Packard V-12 engine. The 5.4-liter V-8 delivers smooth and silent power to a 3-speed automatic transmission. Electronic fuel injection makes for trouble-free starts with seamless drivability, and a dual exhaust with bright tips helps the engine breathe and sound the part of high-performance personal luxury.
Power steering and front disc brakes make for near-effortless long-wheelbase road control. A tan Haartz cloth convertible top opens to reveal a well-appointed saddle leather-upholstered interior with bucket seats, center console, and period-look Packard gauges. Power windows and locks join an AM/FM/CD stereo system for convenience and entertainment. The leather-wrapped banjo-style steering wheel is mounted to a tilt-column for comfort and precision. Packard was the first to offer air-conditioning in a passenger car and, fittingly, this continuation roadster is equipped with modern climate control.
The neo-classic burgundy coachwork features fender skirts with Packard crests with chrome bumpers. The Packard Roadster rides on genuine chrome wire wheels and wide whitewall tires.
