The product of a period-correct frame-off refreshing, including the interior with its fold-down secondary seat for additional storage capability, this 1948 Packard Series 22 took a Best in Class at the Hilton Head Concours in 2016 soon after its completion. The return to peacetime following the hostilities of World War II created a special mix of old and new ideas when it came to automobile design and manufacturing. For Packard, one of the longest-lived luxury names in independent automobile manufacturing, the result were cars like this beautifully appointed Series 22 wood-sided station sedan.
This desirable model featured a primary substructure of steel components with fine-grained hardwood used for the paneling on the exterior and stainless “no mar” trim installed on the wood cargo area inside. Marketed as the successor to the “station wagon,” this extended-roof sedan used the legendary 288 CI Packard Eight, an inline-8 design rated at 130 HP and equipped with a downdraft carburetor and 3-speed manual transmission that has both overdrive and vacuum-assist shifting. The interior was classically appointed by the company, with plaid inserts on the bench seats, a wood-grain dash, tinted glass and a radio with antenna.
The outside of this car harkens to the conservative design characteristics of that era, painted in a bright green with a reduced-profile grille opening and substantial rib-stamped front and rear bumpers complete with bumper guards. The body lines following rearward in an Art Deco-inspired appearance and the use of fender skirts, full-size wheel covers and wide whitewall tires defines the era of its creation. Packard as a brand had begun in 1899, and it outsold Cadillac in those early postwar years; but fate soon proved unkind and the company would disappear during the following decade.
For many years, the slogan was simply “Ask the man who owns one.” This wonderfully refinished, perhaps even whimsical, postwar wood-sided station sedan from the storied marque could well make you the one with the answer.
