While many classic-car enthusiasts rank the 1935 to 1939 “Senior” Packard models among the finest prewar automobiles produced, the introduction of the higher-volume, 8-cylinder 120 lineup in 1935 brought Packard ownership to the wider medium-price market. Preserving the venerable company’s well-deserved reputation for quality and reliability, the 120 was a strong seller with excellent driving dynamics.
Featuring wonderfully streamlined Art Deco-influenced styling, the 120 featured industry-leading mechanical features including stout X-braced chassis frames, independent coil-spring front suspension, effective hydraulic brakes, full-synchromesh transmissions and inline 8-cylinder engines rated at a robust 120 HP at just 3,200 engine revolutions. Steady development and sales success typified the run of the 120, renamed with One-Twenty with the addition of a hyphen for 1940’s Eighteenth Series models, which also carried handsome “120” cloisonné emblems. One chassis was now offered for the One-Twenty, featuring a generous 127-inch wheelbase length.
Body choices were many, including an array of 13 open and closed designs running the gamut from decidedly sporting to Packard’s trademark formality and luxury. Long a collector favorite, the Packard One-Twenty is favored for its mechanical excellence, unmistakable styling and renowned touring capability. The product of a professional restoration including the rebuilt chassis and drivetrain, this 1940 Packard 120 Convertible Coupe is a Southern California-based example with limited ownership including just two keepers for 48 years.
Capably powered by a straight 8-cylinder engine and synchromesh 3-speed manual transmission, it is accented by a leather-trimmed interior, restored or refinished chrome and stainless brightwork, and a power-operated convertible top. Other highlights include front and rear bumper guards, a Packard “goddess” mascot, dual side-mounted spares inside steel covers with chrome mirrors, a Packard-scripted GE spotlight, a black canvas boot cover, and a folding rear luggage rack. Desirable amenities include a factory radio, dash clock and Packard-crested heater. Steel wheels mounting bright trim rings, chrome hubcaps and whitewall tires finish it nicely.
