The final year for Packard’s premium Caribbean, 1956 was the only year the model was available as a two-door hardtop. Just 263 were built, with some 276 convertibles finding homes. Commanding a price of nearly $6,000, the Caribbean indeed competed with some of the world’s finest, most expensive cars. This 1956 Caribbean convertible received a comprehensive restoration in 2007, which earned it the AACA Senior 2008 and AACA Joseph Parkin 2009 awards. Finished in tri-tone Dover White over Naples Orange and black with a white power-operated convertible top, the Caribbean is powered by a 374/310 HP V-8 engine with dual 4-barrel carburetors, a dual-exhaust system and an automatic transmission.
Rolling on wide whitewall tires with chrome wire wheels, the interior matches the exterior in white with Naples Orange and black trim. Overflowing with accessories and amenities, the Caribbean rewarded owners with power seats, power windows, a pushbutton AM radio, twin power antennas, power steering, power brakes, an in-dash clock, full instrumentation, pushbutton gear selection, tinted glass and a highly stylized dashboard with engine-turned detailing. Drivers could also enjoy the self-leveling suspension, Dana Twin Traction rear end and the remote filler option.
Complete with an owner’s manual and dealer manual, this Caribbean also comes with extensive restoration documentation and receipts. In 1952, Packard showed the Pan-American concept car at various events around the country. Fighting an aging image, Packard needed to reinvigorate its public perception and entice younger, well-to-do clients who might otherwise consider models from various American and European contenders. The competition was fierce, and three divisions at General Motors would be unveiling exclusive, factory custom cars in 1953. To boot, rumors were swirling around about a new Continental becoming available in a couple of years.
Taking many styling cues from the Pan-American, Packard introduced the Caribbean for 1953. An exclusive convertible with highly modernized styling, it would sustain through 1956, giving Packard a competitor in the ultra-luxe market.
