The smaller relative of the full-size line of Nash automobiles, the Nash Rambler of the early Fifties was a hit with buyers looking for a practical car that would also stand out in a crowd. While small, the Rambler was not tiny; it could carry an average family of four in reasonable comfort, a quality that, along with its economic operating costs and slippery styling that resembled the larger Nash Ambassador, gave it broad appeal. While the 1951 Nash Rambler station wagon offered here is most certainly a custom ride, it remains largely faithful to its origins in a number of important respects.
A fresh frame-off restoration with just 34,550 original miles and only 28 since its completion, its sheet metal and exterior detailing remain completely stock but for its custom Patel Yellow paint, airbrushed woodgrain greenhouse trim, shaved lower body bright trim and nifty LED tail lights. Backed by a Lokar-shifted 700R4 automatic transmission, the engine uses the same number of cylinders as the original inline 6, but it is now in the arrangement of a GM 4.3L V-6 with HEI ignition, aluminum intake manifold with 4-barrel carburetor and finned aluminum valve covers and air cleaner.
Power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes give the little Nash a whole new level of agility complemented further by glittering Boyd Coddington wheels and high performance tires. Nash purists will like the restrained custom treatment of the Tan leather interior, which retains the elegant styling by Nash’s in-house design consultant and former Paris fashion designer Madame Helene Rother. The stock steering wheel, dash trim and instrument bezels share space with new Classic electronic gauges, custom seats and console, a custom sound system with remote controls and Vintage Air climate control.
