Marketed in its home country as the GTO, and elsewhere as the 3000 GT, Mitsubishi's pretty sports coupé offered a level of performance that more than matched the promise of its looks, boasting a top speed of 153mph (246km/h) in Z16A form, as seen here. First seen in production form in 1990, the 3000 GT was powered by a 3.0-litre 24-valve V6 engine mounted transversely and driving all four wheels (Z16A) or just those at the front (Z15A).
The Z16A also came with four-wheel steering, electronically controlled suspension and active aerodynamics, the front and rear spoilers adjusting automatically. Base models featured a 222bhp engine, while others came with twin turbochargers and various power outputs of up to 300bhp. A six-speed manual gearbox replaced the previous five-speeder in 1993 and in 1994 the range was face-lifted, the original's pop-up headlights being replaced with projector-beam lamps while the brakes were up-rated. The active aero lasted for only a couple more years. Production of all variants ceased in 2000, and today the Mitsubishi 3000 GT is one of the more collectible of modern Japanese classics.
Finished in silver metallic with an eye-popping bright yellow interior, this twin-turbocharged 3000 GT was purchased from René Michiels (the Aston Martin Distributor for Belgium) on 17thMay 2002. It has since spent some time on static display and will require recommissioning prior to road use. Accompanying paperwork consists of a French Carte Grise; a French customs document; and a French change of ownership certificate.
