The giant killer: that’s the moniker Britain's racing legend John Cooper’s Morris Mini 997 was tagged with in 1961 after it became a regular rally winner, eventually chalking up three Monte Carlo Rallies from 1964 to 1967. With a race-tuned 997cc inline-4 making 55 HP, a close-ratio gearbox, front disc brakes and a tuned suspension, British Motor Corporation commissioned 1,000 units to meet homologation requirements for the FIA’s Group 2 rally series. Fast forward to 2002, when Michael Cooper, son of John Cooper, founded John Cooper Works to develop tuning kits for BMW’s revamped Mini Cooper.
Those first kits mainly consisted of an air filter, remapped ECU, upgraded exhaust and a flowed cylinder head, while later kits included uprated fuel injectors, smaller supercharger pulleys or larger turbos, and each received decorative badging, with S models getting individually numbered engine plates. The company was subsequently purchased by BMW in 2008. This 2010 John Cooper Works MM91 Mini Clubman S “three-door” is finished in a silver and black two-tone, and it’s powered by a 208 HP inline-4 with an uprated turbocharger, larger-bore exhaust and a sportier ECU map direct from the factory, all of which is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.
An electronic limited-slip differential is infinitely variable between 0% and 50% depending on the amount of wheel slip, plus Dynamic Traction Control increases the sportiness of the drive. JCW-specific, ABS-assisted Brembo brakes grace all four corners with four-pot calipers in the front and single-piston calipers out back, all incorporating cross-drilled and slotted rotors for maximum brake cooling. The 17-inch alloy wheels are shod in Kumho rubber. Inside, a multi-function steering wheel addresses the driver, as occupants are surrounded in black leather and piano black accent trim.
Power windows, door locks and mirrors are standard fare, as well as heavily bolstered front bucket seats and an AM/FM/CD audio system.
