The new Interstate Highway System was only months into its authorization when Mercury chose to release the new Turnpike Cruiser for the 1957 model year. Driving in post-war America was about to take a large leap forward, and this special model designation would last only two years in the Mercury line. It was the age of the ‘dream car,’ with vehicles being marketed as stylings of the future. First made available in two- and four-door hardtop trim, plans had not been made to release the inaugural Turnpike Cruiser as a convertible.
However, the selection of this car to pace the 1957 Indianapolis 500 found a popular response in Dearborn’s executive offices and the new Convertible Cruiser was announced on January 7, 1957. The company built just 1,265 of them that year, and all Convertible Cruisers featured a continental spare tire kit. The Turnpike Cruiser was also the first car manufactured with quad headlights. This example is beautifully finished in Sun Glitter Yellow with a matching Yellow and Black leather interior, richly detailed with brushed metal dash panels and push-button selectors. It now shows 61,000 actual miles.
The engine was the larger 368 CI version of the Y-block Lincoln engine, which was rated at 290 HP that year. It in turn was backed by a Merc-O-Matic 3-speed transmission that used a push-button gear selector. Other items included the Seat-O-Matic memory power seat, the Lube-O-Matic push-button system, Town and Country signal-seeking radio, two-tone interior and factory-installed tachometer. With scarce availability and low surviving numbers, this Mercury Convertible Turnpike Cruiser offers a true opportunity to own a classic example from Detroit’s ‘big road car’ era of the late 1950s.
