The era of the lead sled will be instantly recalled when you first see this 1950 Merc. From “American Graffiti” to the modern era, the 1949-51 body design has come to exemplify the idea of “low down” when it comes to personized restyling. This car, whose seven-year custom build shows a remarkable amount of forethought and execution, may seem familiar as well. Prior to the application of the custom-mixed Black Cherry paint, this creation was featured at the 2012 SEMA show in bare metal, and both bodywork and paint were completed by GMP Cars in Novato, California. Stunning from every angle, it makes use of modern engineering to be enjoyable today.
In keeping with a FoMoCo-exclusive theme, under the expansive hood is a Ford Racing 302 CI crate engine that utilizes Holley Terminator fuel injection, all nicely blended for a retro-like appearance with minimal chrome work. This is backed by a modern 200R4 overdrive transmission, a narrowed 9-inch rear end and a Strange 4.11 gearset and axles. The car rides on a custom-fitted spec-built Art Morrison chassis that features Ride-Tech air bags, rack-and-pinion steering, 4-wheel Wilwood disc brakes and a 4-link rear suspension.
The exterior is most impressive, with a true 3-inch top chop, custom HID headlights and buckets, and front and rear bumpers redesigned to flow with the car’s smoothed body lines, accented with mild grille and tail-light customizations. Inside is a sandalwood-tone leather interior with burgundy piping, complete with functional quarter-windows, Vintage Air climate control, an aftermarket steering wheel and a factory-rendered dash styling with updated monitoring. The car’s finishing touch is multi-spoke custom HRE wheels wearing modern low-profile rubber, bringing the car into the 21st century.
