The concept of installing a giant engine in a midsize sedan reached its pinnacle with this incredibly rare 1967 Mercury Comet Capri fit with Ford Motor Company’s ultimate torque monster: the R-code 427. Even though this midlevel Mercury looks like an ordinary Comet, it’s one of only six examples built in this configuration. You won’t find any obvious indicators of its potential, aside from 427 fender badges, making this a very sneaky combination when compared to its Comet Cyclone brethren. When it comes to horsepower, the R-code 427 was really something special.
It debuted in the middle of the 1963 model year and continued to serve in select full-size and midsize Ford and Mercury applications through the 1967 production run. The R-code signified the use of two 4-barrel carburetors atop a 427 CI FE-based engine, which was a race-bred engine with just enough manners to behave on the street. With solid lifters, big compression and high-flowing cylinder heads, this combination produced 425 HP at 6,000 RPM and 480 lb-ft of torque at 3,700 RPM. This aggressive powerplant is backed here by a 4-speed manual transmission and a 9-inch rear end packed with 3.89:1 gears.
Mercury built 60 Comets with a 427 CI engine, splitting up production among the four Comet trim levels. When narrowed down to the Capri trim level, Mercury produced only six R-code 427 cars. Wearing a slick coat of black paint with matching black wheels and poverty caps, this unsuspecting Comet continues the sneaky details inside. A peek inside reveals a bench seat and the simple interior package of the Capri trim level. This one has only 19,527 miles on the odometer, and it was the subject of a professional frame-off restoration. It is sold with a dealer invoice and photographic documentation of the VIN on the block.
