The brainchild of American importer Max Hoffman, the SL (Sport Lightweight) series of Mercedes-Benz was launched in 1954 as a line of grand-touring automobiles that combined Mercedes-Benz racing technology and performance with all the luxury appointments enthusiasts of the marque had come to expect. Over the ensuing decades, the SL went through six generations of evolution, culminating in the SLS. Debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, the SLS was the first Mercedes-Benz to be completely designed from a clean sheet of paper by Mercedes-Benz’s AMG racing division.
Billed as the spiritual successor to the famed 300SL Gullwing of the 1950s, the SLS’s all aluminum body also featured its forebearer’s iconic Gullwing-style doors. Under the hood, the SLS sported what was at the time hailed as the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated engine, with its 6.3L V-8 producing some 563 HP and 479 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the SLS was capable of rocketing from zero to 62 MPH in just 3.8 seconds, ultimately reaching a top speed of 196 MPH. Across its entire production run from 2010 to 2014, just 2,734 examples of the SLS AMG were sold in the United States.
