In the world of Mercedes R107s, the 420 SL is a unicorn. Indeed, only 2,148 examples were produced with this evolution of the M116 V8, enlarged to 4.2L. The example presented here is remarkable in several respects. First of all, it is one of the few examples sold in France. It was sold new on April 17, 1987, by the Mercedes dealer in La Courneuve. It paired a “Diamond Blue Metallic” body (code 355) with a black leather interior (271), and its options included cruise control, a front center armrest, automatic climate control, electric windows, and an exterior temperature gauge, as confirmed by its data card.
It was not until the following year that it was purchased by the current owner's father, who used it carefully, mainly for holidays. The service booklet, stamped through 2008, attests to the limited mileage accumulated; today, it totals just 58,650 km from new, exceptionally low for a model of this kind. Invoices from 2008 onward show regular maintenance. In very well-preserved condition, this 420 SL comes with its booklets, tool kit, and even its complete first-aid kit.
Our road test allowed us to appreciate the excellent balance of the 4.2 V8, which is torquier and more powerful than the six-cylinder engine in the 300, while feeling more refined than the 500's powerplant.
