This car has a rich Italian history: it still comes with its original "libretto" and wears its period black registration plates (Targa nera)! Sold new in Palermo, it was registered PA 634042, and it was its incredible state of preservation that appealed to our collector. It left the factory in "Sandbeige 467," which still appears to be its color today. Originally equipped with a manual gearbox, it has dark brown upholstery, whose combination with the body color gives the car a particularly chic look.
A period Becker Europa car radio adorns the superb dashboard, whose refinement is highlighted by the wood trim that follows the shape of the windscreen. Never fully restored, this car has the advantage of having been well preserved throughout its life. First introduced as the 230 SL, this model—which owes its nickname "Pagoda" to the curved shape of its hardtop (not present here)—underwent several mechanical upgrades: following the original 2.3-liter fuel-injected six-cylinder, it received a 2.5-liter engine and then, in its ultimate version as seen here, a 170 hp 2.8-liter engine.
It really comes into its own in this form, with smooth operation that perfectly suits the touring character of this elegant automobile.
