Finished in red with champagne interior, this car is a rare manual-transmission example of the 230 SL, a landmark model that founded a sports car dynasty that would prove an enormous commercial success for Mercedes-Benz. Introduced at the Geneva Salon in March 1963 as replacement for the 190 SL, the 230 SL abandoned its predecessor's four-cylinder engine in favour of a 2.3-litre fuel-injected six derived from that of the 220 SE and producing 150bhp. An instant classic, the body design was all-new while beneath the skin the running gear was conventional Mercedes-Benz, featuring all-round independent suspension (by swing axles at the rear), disc front/drum rear brakes and a choice of four-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Top speed was in excess of 120mph.

The 230 SL even managed a debut competition victory, as Sporting Motorist noted: "Soon after the 230 SL was announced, Eugen Böhringer drove one to victory in the Spa-Sofia-Liège Rally, and although competition outings are rare, this was the sort of debut one would expect from the Stuttgart factory." Christened 'Pagoda' after their distinctive shape, these SL models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their day and continue to be highly sought after by collectors.

This 230 SL was first registered in the UK in December 1963 as '654 NOU' and was taken by the first owner to Jersey, Channel Islands in May 1977. The second owner lived in Jersey also. The Mercedes was subsequently bought by a restorer of classic cars (and cousin of the current owner) who sold it to the lady vendor in 2010. She imported the Mercedes into Guernsey and in 2011/2012 her husband restored it for her as a wedding present. The restoration works included having the engine reconditioned by Crewe Engines and a repaint in the original cellulose paint. The engine rebuild was carried out at 52,000 miles and the current odometer reading is 54,039 miles.

The car has been used and enjoyed by the vendor during the summer months. The hardtop, which is offered with the car has not been used, and therefore is in an unrestored state. Described by the private vendor as in good condition throughout. A very genuine car, this beautiful early Pagoda is offered with restoration bills and Jersey registration papers.
