In 2008, Mercedes-Benz and AMG marked the 40th year of their partnership with a very special 40th Anniversary Edition of the CL65 AMG limited to just 40 cars for the entire world and only 20 cars for the United States, a sterling example of which is offered here from the Michael Fux Collection. The “standard” CL65 AMG is already a magnificent automobile in the great Mercedes-Benz tradition, a big, aggressively handsome and unrelenting performer that nonetheless cocoons its occupants in unmatched luxury.
To that refined conveyance, AMG added a 6.0L twin-turbocharged and intercooled V-12 engine that churns out a breathtaking 604 HP and 738 lb-ft of torque through AMG’s 5-speed Speedshift automatic transmission. Accompanied by the jet-like roar of AMG’s Sport exhaust, the Biturbo V-12 catapults the car to 60 MPH in just 4.3 seconds and to a limited top speed of 155 MPH. AMG’s modified Active Body Control suspension system maintains the CL65’s eminently civilized road manners, aided by advanced power-assisted sliding-caliper disc brakes behind low-profile Z-rated tires on 20-inch AMG double-spoke wheels.
The 40th Anniversary’s headline feature, however, is its exclusive Alu Beam Liquid Metal paint, a lustrous shade of silver previously seen only on Mercedes-Benz show cars. Incredibly expensive and unique to Mercedes-Benz, the Alu Beam process used particles approximately one-quarter the size of conventional flakes for more precise coverage and intense light reflection, resulting in an unusually brilliant finish protected by several layers of clear coat that further deepen the effect. Inside are AMG Exclusive Brown premium leather upholstery with diamond-pattern stitching, Harmon Kardon sound, Keyless Go, power sunroof and a "One out of 40" badge on the palm-rest of the COMAND controller.
A carbon fiber rear diffuser, carbon fiber interior trim, V-12 exterior badging and interior headrest embroidery, and 40th Edition badging round out this special package. Best of all, this immaculate example has been driven just 122 miles.
