  • A lovely 190 SL for the connoisseur of Mercedes-Benz engineering

Following the success of the 300 SL Coupe and Roadster, Mercedes-Benz's United States importer, Max Hoffman, suggested that a similarly styled, less costly alternative might be successful. The resulting 190 SL proved popular with the public at the 1954 New York International Auto Show, and it remained in strong demand throughout its nine-year production run. The 190 SL was well-suited for touring, as it featured copious luggage space, despite having a convertible top. The model has continued to impress discerning collectors, and masterfully restored examples such as the one offered here are fleeting in their public availability.

This 190 SL was ordered by the Mercedes-Benz distributor in Los Angeles. Per its data card, a copy of which is on file, it was ordered in Black with Red (1079) leather interior and was shipped to the United States on 9 April 1956. Following ownership by Moses and Betty Walker of Sacramento, California, it was acquired for the present collection in 2008, and went on to be fully restored by My Classic Car Garage of Topsfield, Massachusetts.

A breakdown of the restoration and associated costs is included in the history file, noting that the bodywork was professionally prepared and fitted with beautiful new paint and dyed leather Cognac hides—a change from the original hue—as well as correct rubber floor mats. Additionally, the mechanical systems were rebuilt, reportedly with all new Mercedes-Benz parts. Well-preserved since its restoration, the car still appears in excellent overall condition and is complete with a factory hardtop, albeit not the original example for the car.

A lovely 190 SL for the connoisseur of Mercedes-Benz engineering, this car would be a delightful addition to any collection—or to any oceanfront boulevard or country highway, just as they were when new. It is a lovely specimen of a model that is easy to love.
