Finished in Montego Blue Mica with a black interior, this 1994 Mazda RX7 shows 38,505 miles on the odometer and presents in highly original condition. The rear wheels are driven by an automatic transmission spun by a 1.3L Rotary engine, the lightweight powerplant nestled between the front axle and firewall helping create a near midengine chassis configuration. The black interior is fitted with cloth-upholstered bucket seats, a center console, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control and an AM/FM/CD/cassette stereo system engineered by Dolby. The pop-up headlights are an RX7 design hallmark, and the gold badge detailing adds a little pop to the overall look. Introduced for 1978, the RX7 offered customers a nimble, lightweight, two-seat alternative to numerous other brands on the market, most notably the Datsun Z. It hit the market at the right time, as Datsun was angling to take the Z more upmarket with a larger body, interior and a wealth of creature comforts that would transform the Z from rugged sports car into refined GT car. While the RX7 largely refrained from going too far upmarket, it was never a car without.
The third generation, known as the FD cars, began production for 1992 and ceased importation throughout the world at varying times, the United States seeing its last shipment in 1995. Designed by Yoichi Sato with input by Wu-huang Chin and Tom Matano, the FD RX7 was lightyears from previous generations and looked to have been styled by the wind itself. Available with a complex twin-turbocharger system, the RX7 was always about lightweight and balance, and most agree the FD delivered the most refined interpretation of the philosophy.
