In the 1960s, while Enzo Ferrari absolutely refused to produce even a single saloon, Maserati “took the plunge.” The first generation, designed by Pietro Frua, dates from 1963. Ten years later came the Quattroporte II, from the Citroën era, with limited success—and a limited engine offering—compared with the marque’s ambitions for the model. The situation was put right in 1979 with the third series, designed by Giugiaro. It featured the historic V8 engine and a level of finish that met the expectations of traditional customers. That was all it took for royalty to take a renewed interest in the marque.
It was nicknamed “Presidenziale” because it was so popular with the Italian authorities, particularly with Italian Presidents Sandro Pertini and Francesco Cossiga. In 1987, Maserati unveiled the Royale, offering a significant improvement in finish and equipment for twice the price of a standard Quattroporte. The interior was upholstered entirely in top-quality leather, the wood trim was walnut, and the 4.9-litre V8’s power was increased to 300 bhp.
As confirmed by Fabio Collina, manager of Maserati’s historical archives, this late-1989 Royale was delivered new to Montelabbate, Italy, and is one of the rare examples fitted with the five-speed ZF manual gearbox. Its name is well deserved when you take your place inside. The interior, trimmed in “Cuio Naturale” brown leather, is sumptuous, and the list of options is generous: a three-spoke Momo wooden sports steering wheel, electrically adjustable seats, an electric sunroof, a Pioneer radio with wireless remote control, two Nokia telephone holders, and retractable walnut tables concealed in the rear doors.
Today, it is part of an important Italian collection and is certainly one of its rarest cars. This luxurious Royale, finished in dark metallic “Rifle Grey,” shows 112,500 km on the odometer. It has been laid up for many years and needs recommissioning. The Royale is one of the jewels of Maserati production and embodies the marque’s ambition to conquer the highest echelons of society. A true rarity on the market, this example is an opportunity to acquire one of the most luxurious and exclusive cars of its era, admired by the likes of Luciano Pavarotti.
Please note that an application for a duplicate Italian registration document is in progress, and it will be handed over to the buyer as soon as possible after the sale.
