The Società Anonima Officine Alfieri Maserati was founded in December 1914 in Bologna by Alfieri Maserati and his brothers Ettore and Ernesto, specialising in the preparation and improvement of Isotta-Fraschini for racing. At the beginning of the 1920s, a fruitful partnership with Diatto led Alfieri to design his first Grand Prix car, which would act as a draft for the first Maserati, the Tipo 26 of 1926. Maserati met with immense success in European racing in the "voiturette" category throughout the 1930s, but his most decisive victories were won on the other side of the Atlantic, when Wilbur Shaw won the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940.
When production resumed after the war, in 1947, Maserati returned to his role building Grand Prix cars, while starting to build a few sports and grand touring models. His first true grand touring vehicle, the A6 1500 presented for sale here, received an excellent reception when it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in 1947. This model, with coachwork by Pinin Farina, marks a major turning point in the history of global coachwork: unibody construction. It is in fact the contemporary of the Cisitalia 202, by the same Pinin Farina. It was acclaimed by both the press and the public.
Its engine, with aluminium engine block and magnesium oil sump, is a 1488cc six in-line with a single overhead camshaft, based on that of the marque's 1947 Grand Prix car, driven by Gigi Viloresi. Revving the engine elicits exhilarating growls, worthy of the finest melodies played by well-designed engines. The ladder-frame chassis rested on double-wishbone front suspension lifted directly from race cars, while at the back there was a rigid axle with coil springs. Depending on the type of coachwork, the maximum speed reached between 90 and 93mph.
As of 1949, the A6 1500 GT was offered with a rebuilt engine, fitted with three Weber carburettors, bringing it to 89bhp and taking the maximum speed beyond 95mph. Only 10 cars received a 3C factory fit! Of 61 cars built between 1947 and 1950, most were bodied as coupés by Pinin Farina. Chassis 076 is one of those 10 rare cars delivered new with the 3-carburettor option, as Maserati's records show. Its story began in 1949 when chassis and engine number 076 were assembled in Modena. It was on 3 February 1950 that 076 entered Pinin Farina's workshop to receive its aluminium coachwork, which bears the number 211.
Three months later, on 3 May 1950, the car was ready for pre-delivery testing, then returned to Pinin Farina on 17 May 1950. It was then the well-known manager of the Rome showroom, Mimmo Dei, who delivered it to its first owner, Mrs Margherita Nardilli, on 16 June 1950. The blue Maserati then quickly made its way to France, being purchased by Georges Mutrux in 1951. The latter, then an architectural engineer and a member of the Société Historique d'Auteuil et de Passy (SHAP), was born in the United States and arrived in France during the war. He met his wife, who owned a boutique on the Île Saint-Louis, there.
Georges Mutrux kept the car for around a decade, before selling it in 1962 to Michel Cardon, of Hargicourt in the Aisne department. The Maserati then had a slightly modified radiator grill and required some restoration. Mr Cardon then had the engine restored by Maserati in Italy and used it for several years with the registration number 263 HA 02 before a broken gearbox sprocket brought the car to a halt, until it was rediscovered, in the early 1980s, by the well-known Francky Dumontant. In 1984, it was the automotive artist Alain Moitrier who purchased the car from Francky Dumontant.
Alain Moitrier, who already owned a Maserati Mistral, did not have registration documents for the A6, he therefore undertook extensive research with Maserati and with Pininfarina to identify his new purchase before starting its restoration. Consequently, we have at our disposal letters exchanged with Mr Cimarosti of Automobil Revue, Mr Fredi Valentini of Carrozzeria Pininfarina and Alfieri Maserati's office.
One of these letters received from the Italian firm even stated Maserati's wish to buy chassis 076 back from Mr Moitrier: "In reference to your request of 25.10.84, concerning the Maserati Tipo A6 1500 of 1949, as we do not have this type of car in our collection, we would like to inform you that we would be interested in purchasing it." [...] As such, if you intend to sell it, please inform us of an appropriate price" In the 1980s, Alain Moitrier began dissembling the Maserati, while documenting the stages in photographs or sketches, which have been kept on file. In the end, Mr Moitrier decided to part ways with the 076 in 1993, to the benefit of its current and last owner.
A lifelong Maserati fan, the latter obtained the assistance of the renowned Gilbert Tissier to repatriate the 1500. It waited a few more years in his workshop, before restoration work proper began in 2010. As such, the mechanics were dismantled to be completely restored in the workshop of Mr Tissier, a specialist in Italian engines, working with the Garage Supersport in the Seine-et-Marne department. The coachwork and chassis were transported to the well-known Provost Automobiles in Le Mans.
The body and the chassis were therefore taken apart so that the metallic trellis structure supporting it could be renovated in full, in the same way, the aluminium panels were stripped, repaired and reformed to return the Maserati to its original form and splendour. The chassis was also stripped down to receive an anti-corrosion treatment and was painted its original grey. The car was exhibited, as restoration was ongoing, at Rétromobile 2015, on the Provost Automobiles stand. Once the coachwork restoration was finished and the engine reassembled, the Maserati was entrusted to Emmanuel Poulet at Sellerie de l'Epée to have its passenger compartment refurbished.
Completed in 2019, 076 was run in by Gilbert Tissier and used for rare outings by its owner. Today, 076 still has its original engine, still with its three Weber Tipo 36 DO 2, whose serial numbers between 2008 and 2202 prove that they were indeed factory fitted. The restored coachwork has been painted blue, as stated in Maserati's records. The red upholstery is also in a nearly new condition, while the original Maserati counters retain pride of place behind the three-spoke steering wheel. This is a marvellous car to drive, gifted with a generous, lively racing engine.
Having taken part in a road test of the 076, we were able to observe that it is in excellent working order and to savour the superbly melodic tone of its six-cylinder engine. Eligible for the Mille Miglia and numerous prestigious events, this Maserati A6 1500 Gran Turismo is a remarkable model on all points. It is one of the 10 chassis factory-fitted with three carburettors. Its history is known and clear from its origins. Its restoration was undertaken without any budgetary limitations!
Sold with its French registration document (carte grise), a well-filled file including historical and technical documents, invoices and archive photographs, this very exclusive Maserati A6, in exceptional condition, represents a key milestone in the history of the marque with the trident.
