"The Ghibli is to Maserati what the DB7 was to Aston Martin or the Elise to Lotus. This car has to take the company from a Stygian mire of minority interest to mainstream respectability. ...the Ghibli has been attracting attention like no Maserati in history." – Autocar.

First applied to its fabulous, Ghia-styled supercar of the 1960s, Maserati revived the 'Ghibli' name for an ultra-high-performance Biturbo variant in the 1990s and again in 2013 for a new sports saloon. The latter's introduction marked Maserati's return to the medium-size luxury car sector after a hiatus of some 20 years, and as an acknowledgement of changing times in the global car market, was launched at the Shanghai Motor Show. Coded 'M157', the new Ghibli was intended as a (relatively) high-volume model to compete with likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Jaguar.

It would turn out to be an outstanding success for Maserati, with more than 100,000 built at the company's Giovanni Agnelli plane at Grugliasco, Turin by the end of 2019. To put that production figure into perspective: Maserati sold 6,000 cars in 2012 and 36,448 in 2014, the increase being almost entirely attributable to the Ghibli. Clearly, there are plenty of customers eager to own a car with Maserati's famous trident emblem on its nose.

Based on a 200mm shorter wheelbase than the flagship Quattroporte VI four-door saloon, the Ghibli incorporates a steel monocoque chassis with additional sub-frames, the front made of aluminium, and shares its suspension with the Quattroporte. Suspension is by double wishbones at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear axle; Maserati's Skyhook adaptive damping system is optional. All Ghibli models have a ZF 8-speed 8HP automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential.

The braking system uses vented discs all round, with four-piston callipers at the front and floating callipers at the rear, while 'S' models feature larger cross-drilled rotors, six-piston callipers at the front, and four-piston callipers at the rear. The work of Maserati Centro Stile under the supervision of Marco Tencone, the curvaceous body achieved a highly creditable drag coefficient of Cd 0.31, a figure further reduced to a remarkable 0.29 by a later facelift.

At time of launch, the Ghibli was available with a choice of two petrol and one diesel engines: a 3.0-litre 325bhp twin-turbocharged V6 in the base models; a 404bhp twin-turbocharged V6 in the high-performance Ghibli S and all-wheel drive Ghibli S Q4; or a 3.0-litre 271bhp V6 turbo-diesel, the latter being Maserati's first ever diesel engine. The petrol engines are designed and assembled by Ferrari.

Maserati's 'Q4' all-wheel drive system is available only on the Ghibli S. During normal operation the car is rear-wheel drive only, but when needed, the system can divert up of 50% of engine power to the front wheels. Safety features and amenities include adaptive cruise control; adaptive LED headlights; lane keep assist; steering assist; and brake force assist, all contributing to the Ghibli's five-star crash test rating from NCAP. Buyers had a choice of different leathers for the interior upholstery, plus the usual extensive list of options that one expects of a car in this class.

Delivered new in Italy, this unique Ghibli S Q4 was hand built by Garage Italia for Lapo Elkann, grandson of FIAT boss, the late Giovanni Agnelli, and has had only one owner from new. The exterior is finished in Gessato Aluminio Spazzolato (brushed aluminium) and the interior trimmed in a combination of leather, Alcantara, and pinstripe fabric. The car was last serviced by Maserati Rossocorsa Srl on 9th January 2019 (at 67,409 kilometres); the previous service having been carried out by Forza Service Maserati in Turin on 27th October 2016 (at 58,898 kilometres). Currently displaying a total of circa 67,500 kilometres on the odometer, this exceptional Ghibli S Q4 comes with all books and Italian registration papers.

VAT, Car Tax and Customs duty at the Standard rates will be payable on this lot if the car remains in Switzerland.

Maserati Ghibli S Q4 berline sport 2015
