Despite numerous racetrack successes that included Juan Manuel Fangio's fifth Formula 1 World Championship (at the wheel of a 250F) and runner-up spot in the World Sports Car Championship with the fabulous 450S - both in 1957, the marque's most successful season - Maserati was by that time facing a bleak future. Its parent company's financial difficulties forced a withdrawal from racing and Maserati's survival strategy centred on establishing the company as a producer of road cars. The Modena marque's new era began in 1957 with the launch of the Touring-bodied 3500 GT, its first road car built in significant numbers.

A luxury 2+2, the 3500 GT drew heavily on Maserati's competition experience, employing a tubular chassis frame and an engine derived from the 350S competition sports car unit of 1956. Suspension was independent at the front by wishbones and coil springs while at the back there was a conventional live axle/semi-elliptic arrangement. The twin-overhead-camshaft, six-cylinder engine was a close relative of that used in the 250F and developed around 220bhp initially on carburettors, later examples producing 235bhp on Lucas mechanical fuel injection.

Initially built with drum brakes and four-speed transmission, the 3500 GT was progressively updated, gaining five speeds, front disc brakes and, finally, all-disc braking before production ceased in 1964.

A desirable 'pre-injection' model equipped with triple Weber 42DCOE carburettors, this Maserati 3500 GT was delivered new to the USA and brought to Holland in 2005. The former owner worked on the car for a couple of years prior to 2010. He mainly concentrated on the running gear, renewing the brake discs, callipers, hoses and all suspension ball joints, and fitting a stainless-steel exhaust. In 2010 the owner emigrated and left the unfinished project in Holland. The vendor bought the car some three years ago and finished the job (some bills on file).

Completing the restoration involved totally stripping the car (glass out), making some bodywork repairs and repainting in its original colour. In addition, the engine was totally rebuilt with new pistons, valves, bearings, etc at a cost of €30,000 by Maserati expert Lapré Engineering in Deventer. Likewise, the transmission was rebuilt and upgraded with a period-correct ZF five-speed gearbox replacing the original ZF four-speed unit. The leather interior was re-upholstered some years ago and the carpets are new. The original Borrani wheels were refurbished and shod with new tyres. The result is an easy driving car with a very lively engine, which competed in several rallies.
