First shown as a concept car at the 1998 British International Motor Show, the Lotus 340R used the Elise's bonded aluminium mid-engined chassis, basic running gear and 1.8-litre Rover K-Series engine in its 177bhp form. Originally the target bhp/ton power-to-weight ratio, '340' ended up being the total production of this exclusive and exciting car.
Even more Spartan than the Elise, the 340R has no roof, doors, windows or heating (all omitted to save weight) while the narrowed body has carbon-fibre cycle wings instead of the real thing. The end result is a fantastic car that is unmatched in current production and one that, according to evo magazine, enables its driver to, "bask in the quizzical wonderment that every other road user expresses when you pull up alongside". Despite looking like a track-day special, a role, incidentally, at which it excels, the 340R possesses full European homologation and delivers a level of ride comfort totally unexpected in such a performance-orientated car.
Finished in Anthracite with blue interior, the immaculate 340R we offer is one of only 43 left-hand drive units built and has the added benefit of the optional Lotus 'Sport Pack'. The result is an increase in maximum power to 192bhp, which translates into a 0-100km/h time of 4.3 seconds and a maximum speed of around 220km/h.
Number '18' in the series, this 340R was purchased in April 2000 by Lotus Cerini in Castelletto sopra Ticino at a cost of 117 million lire. The interior has recently been completely refurbished, the seats being re-trimmed in new blue Alcantara while retaining the original Lotus logos. This car also has the optional lightweight aluminium control pedals and removable OMP racing steering wheel. The tyres are new high-performance Toyo R888.
Acquired by the current (third) owner in 2016, and overhauled exclusively by Lotus, this car looks fresh from the showroom, having covered fewer than 30,000 kilometres from new (1,000 with the seller).
