The original designers of the original Lincoln Zephyr never knew who Terry Cook was, but Cook certainly helped make this great two-door luxury vehicle into a Rodder’s delight. Just as the former Car Craft editor, “van-in” roustabout and founder of the legendary Lead East car shows dreamed it, the 1937-style Zephyr custom offered here was built under license from Deco Rides, the fiberglass design firm Cook founded for such projects. As No. 22 of 99 built, this beautiful machine is signed by Terry Cook and has been driven 2,800 miles since completion.
The engine under its hood is a GM Vortec 5.3L V-8 crate engine equipped with a conical air cleaner, fuel injection and rear-exit dual exhaust, selected for ease of maintenance and careful fitment beneath the expansive hood and narrow engine bay. Behind this is a 4L60E 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission, and this car has both power steering and power disc brakes as well. Riding on its substantial 125-inch wheelbase, these tributes are built upon a rectangular steel chassis with a sturdy X-member, featuring independent front suspension with rack-and-pinion steering.
Painted in rich cream-hued white, the shape has been further refined with many touches, including the laid-back and chopped windshield, blended and lengthened fenders, integrated running boards, dual-piece grille, teardrop headlights and suicide-style forward opening doors. Inside is a beautifully customized interior in two-tone tan accents, with everything from air conditioning to a navigation system using a console-mounted screen. Add in electric windows, a custom-matched steering wheel, centered large-face speedometer with lower auxiliary readouts, a floor shifter and wood-grain accents to complete these appointments.
Sans any lettered identification on the body, the stellar recreated Deco-themed lines are augmented by rear fender skirts, which cover 10-spoke custom wheels and low-profile radial tires. There can be no doubt of the impact Cook’s decades of involvement have had on the Rodding hobby. Here is your opportunity to own a custom that carries that impact forward with you.
