First offered in 1958, the 430 CI engine was standard issue in the Lincoln Continental and optional in certain Mercurys and Fords. It powered Continentals through 1965, offering varying horsepower figures depending on the year, but it was an inherently smooth engine that ran very close to absolutely silent. Lincoln had a fine reputation in racing, thanks to its work in La Carrera Panamericana, and the company was quietly becoming the choice of Hot Rodders to supply mills for their chariots.
Interestingly, the 430 was the first American production engine to deliver 400 HP with the optional Super Marauder package featuring three 2-barrel Holley carburetors and a special intake created by Moon Products. The 430 replaced the aging Y-Block Lincoln engines and brought about a much-needed dose of power with the added cache of an engine measuring over 400 CI. Building on its racing prowess, Bertram Yachts won the first Miami to Nassau race using a boat powered by two 430 CI engines; Holman Moody used a number of Ford Thunderbirds in the 1959 NASCAR season, some of which were powered by the 430 and one of which finished a close second at the 1959 Daytona 500.
And, Rodney Singer and Karol Miller won the 1959 NHRA Nationals Top Eliminator with a dragster powered by a GMC supercharged 430, the first supercharged Top Eliminator in NHRA history. This 1960 430 CI V-8 engine features a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, hydraulic valve lifters and produces 315 HP and 465 lb-ft of torque. Fitted with a power steering pump and air conditioning compressor, it’s also backed by the Turbo-Drive 3-speed automatic transmission. The block is painted black while the heads and intake manifold have been finished in bright red topped with black rocker arm covers, one of which has a dent and scrape. The AC compressor is silver with a black pulley.
Certainly not an engine often seen outside of a car, this 430 might be a perfect conversation starter or a project to build for a car looking for a vintage engine with gobs of power potential.
