Land Rover cut its teeth in the perils of war, namely getting British soldiers and equipment anywhere necessary during World War II. Rugged, robust, dependable and reasonably lightweight, the Land Rover set many standards in off-roading that were adopted by other off-road vehicle manufacturers. In 1948, Land Rover began marketing their vehicles for citizens to use in agriculture, adventure and familial pursuits while continually marketing to various government agencies. Soon, longer wheelbases followed along with various body types for various tasks, and it wasn’t long before Land Rover became a name synonymous with sturdiness, durability and versatility around the world.

Most popularly sold in 90 or 110 variants, the numbers representing the wheelbase lengths, they were often seen in local and international off-road competitions, frequently dominating their classes. One such competition was the Camel Trophy, an annual competition that began in 1980 with teams from Germany using Jeeps to traverse and explore the Amazon Basin. In 1981, Land Rover was sourced to supply vehicles and through the Camel Trophy’s last adventure in 2000, Land Rover was the most common vehicle sponsor.

This 1989 Land Rover Defender 110 underwent a restoration that was finished in March 2020, emerging in Camel Trophy livery complete with sponsorship decals and the famous Sandglow Yellow paint. Powered by the 2.5L 200 Tdi Turbo Diesel inline 4-cylinder engine with a Turbo Technics turbocharger, LT77 5-speed manual transmission and an LT230 2-speed transfer case, it rolls on Michelin XZL tires with proper body-colored 16-inch wheels, all suspended with Bilstein shocks. In the case of fording deeper waters, the engine can breathe through a Nakatanenga snorkel. Fitted with an external roll cage, a proper Brownchurch roof rack is mounted with an axle, jerry cans, shovel, pick and sand tracks.

A Mantec front bumper with Dixon-Bate tow hooks and Brownchurch brush bar share space with a Warn 8274 winch and auxiliary lights. The interior is upholstered with Exmoor upholstery, the vinyl surfaces appear in like-new condition, and the cargo hold offers foldable jump seats. Drivers will appreciate additional information provided by VDO auxiliary gauges. All things considered, this is a fine opportunity to snap up an ultra-rare Defender 110 in what’s likely the most exciting competition colors the brand ever wore.
