Launched in 1961, the Flavia saloon maintained Lancia's enviable reputation for advanced and innovative automotive engineering. Designed by Antonio Fessia and inspired by his Cemsa prototype of 1947, the Flavia was Italy's first series-production car to employ front-wheel drive. Carried well forward of the front wheels, the engine was a 1,488cc, overhead-valve, horizontally-opposed four; suspension was independent at the front and by beam axle at the rear, and there were dual-circuit, servo-assisted disc brakes all round. The saloon was joined by the shorter-wheelbase Pininfarina-styled coupé in 1962, the latter providing the basis for a convertible version by Vignale.
Simultaneously, Lancia and Zagato exhibited the Flavia Sport during the 1962 Salon de Genève, its unconventional design by Ercole Spada featuring a startling cutaway front grille and curved rear windows. In keeping with Zagato's tradition of building lightweight designs, its Flavia Sport coupé sported a full alloy body.
In 1963 the range was updated with a 1,800cc engine, which when installed in the Sport Zagato produced 100bhp, good enough for a top speed of 187km/h. Only 670 Flavia Sport Zagatos were produced between 1962 and 1967: 101 1.3-litre models and 569 1.8-litre cars, 32 of the latter being fuel-injected.
This particular 1.8-litre Lancia Flavia Sport Zagato was delivered new on 30th June 1965. It was partially and sympathetically restored in the early 2000s when in the Netherlands. Brought to France in 2006, the Flavia has been maintained over the years and was shown at the 2011 edition of Rétromobile.
In 2014, the car was acquired by a lady driver who had competed in the Monte-Carlo Historique and Le Rallye des Princesses with a rally-prepared Fulvia Sport Zagato. The Flavia was then driven on various touring rallies organised by the Lancia Club de France, and even visited its native Italy. The car is now in a healthy condition; it has never been fully restored but has been maintained cosmetically and mechanically over the years. In late 2020, the battery and the brake master cylinder were replaced, while in 2021 the wheels were repainted and the chrome hubcaps restored.
The Flavia will be sold complete with its French Carte Grise; its jack and spare wheel; a folder containing invoices from 2002 to date; and various technical documents and brochures. This is an interesting and rare Zagato-designed Lancia, which is eligible for many historic rallies including the Tour Auto.
