Although extravagantly specified, prestige-badged and high performance SUVs have become commonplace in recent years, remarkably it has been some 35 years since Lamborghini—always a manufacturer of which the unexpected could be expected—introduced their herculean LM002.
Featuring a predictably substantial tubular steel chassis derived from the company’s ill-fated Cheetah military vehicle, the LM002 was powered by the same magnificent 48-valve, 5.2-litre V-12 engine as the mighty Countach and featured a five-speed ZF gearbox, switchable two- and four-wheel drive, a luxurious full leather interior and air conditioning.
Originally ordered in the attractive colour combination of Argento Metallico with grey leather, chassis “12110” was delivered to its first owner, prominent Italian industrialist Sergio Tontarelli of Ancona, on 29 April 1988. Remarkably, it would remain in his ownership for the next 28 years, during which time it covered only a modest mileage. Indeed, at the time of cataloguing, the vehicle had covered only 22,598 km.
Fastidiously maintained during its current ownership, and recently subject of a major service by Cartech Knowledge GmbH of Ismaning, Germany in December 2021 at a cost of some €16,500, chassis 12110 represents a highly significant and correct example of this landmark design and could soon exploit its formidable performance and impressive off-road capabilities once again.
Les SUV de hautes performances équipés de façon extravagante et portant la griffe de constructeurs prestigieux sont devenus monnaie courante ces dernières années, mais il faut remarquer que cela fait quelque 35 ans que Lamborghini, un constructeur qui nous a habitués à l'inhabituel, a présenté son colossal LM002.
Construite sur un châssis tubulaire en acier qu'on devine généreusement dimensionné et qui était issu de celui du Cheetah, le véhicule militaire de triste mémoire de la firme, la LM002 était équipée du même magnifique V12 de 5,2 litres et 48 soupapes que la puissante Countach, d'une boîte ZF à cinq rapports couplée à deux ou quatre roues motrices, d'un luxueux intérieur tout cuir et de l'air conditionné.
Commandé à son origine dans l'attirante harmonie gris Argento Metallico et intérieur en cuir gris, ce châssis 12110 fut livré le 29 avril 1988 à son premier propriétaire, l'éminent industriel italien Sergio Tontarelli, d'Ancône. On notera qu'il est resté en sa possession pendant 28 ans et qu'il n'a effectué pendant toutes ces années qu'un kilométrage modeste. Au moment de l'édition du catalogue, il n'avait parcouru que 22 598 km.
Minutieusement entretenu par son actuel propriétaire, et ayant bénéficié en décembre 2021 d'une importante révision effectuée par Cartech Knowledge GmbH à Ismaning (Allemagne) pour quelque 16 500 €, le châssis 12110 constitue un exemplaire très remarquable et très fidèle de ce monument de design. Il pourrait très bientôt mettre une fois encore en action ses remarquables performances et ses impressionnantes capacités de tout-terrain.
