Finished in Rosso Siviglia with a black interior, this 1984 Lamborghini Jalpa is one of just 410 Jalpas built between 1981 and 1988. Fitted with a targa-style removable center section roof panel, it is powered by a midmounted 3.5L DOHC V-8 engine with a dual exhaust and a 5-speed manual transmission. The black leather interior features bucket seats, a center console with a gated shifter, factory air conditioning, black carpeted Lamborghini shield emblazoned floormats and an Alpine stereo system among other amenities.
Rolling on silver-finished Ruote O.Z. wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza tires, the Jalpa would be a lovely addition to any collection, or a fantastic car to begin a collection. The Jalpa was launched in the throes of disaster, as the 1970s economy, an international oil crisis, political unrest in Italy, insurance regulations and a botched attempt at building a military vehicle and a partnership with BMW all ganged up on Lamborghini, forcing it into bankruptcy in 1978.
The Mimran brothers, Jean-Claude and Patrick, were appointed by the Italian courts to oversee the company’s receivership in 1980, at which point Patrick assumed leadership and began restructuring the company and its products. The Lamborghini Silhouette, which was a sales disaster, was redeveloped into the Jalpa, and the flagship Countach was reengineered to meet various U.S. regulations, allowing it to be sold legally in the biggest market in the world.
Introduced at the 1981 Geneva Motor Show, the Jalpa was an obvious contender against the likes of the Porsche 911S, Ferrari 308 and Maserati Merak and quietly assisted the company in establishing an official network of dealerships in the United States. For 1984, the Jalpa received a number of small but noticeable improvements, bolstering public and media interest in the car. Known as the baby Countach, the Jalpa was also known to be an exceptionally rewarding car to drive and an enjoyable vehicle that was very quick and capable of a top speed of around 150 MPH, hugely respectable for the day.
