Lamborghini once again stole the Geneva show in 1968 with the Espada, styled by Marcello Gandini, the genius who heads Bertone’s design studio and whose other designs include the Marzal, Countach, Diablo, Lancia Stratos and Cizeta V16. The name, as was becoming typical Lamborghini practice, bore a bullfighting significance; the Espada, as the car was called, is the sword used by the matador to deliver the fatal wound. The new car used the familiar 3929cc V12 engine as seen in the Miura, whilst the level of passenger amenities was of the highest order, including air conditioning, fine leather upholstery and electric windows.

The detail features of the Espada were a veritable encyclopaedia of style and innovation, distinguishing it as a car for the VIP with taste. The fastest four seater in the world with a top speed of over 150mph, it finally satisfied one of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s longest-standing ambitions: to produce in series a fast, comfortable Gran Turismo.

This wonderfully presented Series II Espada was delivered new to its first owner in 1971 and was previously part of a private collection for over two decades. Purchased by its most recent vendor, a private collector, the Lamborghini was treated to an extensive restoration which included a respray in the current Riviera Blue it wears today. In very good order throughout, the paintwork and interior show little sign of age, as to the engine bay which presents nicely. Included in the history file are various sundry invoices, the current MoT test certificate and the UK V5C registration document.

Reported to be in good driving condition, the Lamborghini is ready to be used and enjoyed by a new custodian. Even today there are few cars that can match the Espada's on-road presence and this example is no exception.
